Renewable energy makes the case for reducing expenses: paper

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A report entitled 'The Renewable Energy Prospects: UAE' has detailed the huge amount of funds the country could save, annually, up to AED6.9 billion, by opting to produce a 10 percent share of renewable energy in its total energy supply - and this includes almost 25 percent in the power sector, said a UAE daily.

In an editorial on Thursday, The Gulf News said, "Those are just the financials of opting for renewable energy. The health and environment benefits are also beneficial to the population in the long run. The global energy landscape is changing and the UAE is at the apex of this evolution, thanks to an approach of innovation and diversification.

"As the country's population grows, people are consuming higher volumes of natural gas on a daily basis. This leads to higher costs in production and import. Renewable energy makes the case for reducing expenses, given that solar and wind are the cheapest sources of new energy supply.

"Sources like wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric and biomass provide sufficient benefits for the climate, health and economy. Each of them have unique benefits and costs. In showing the inclination towards improving public health and environmental quality, the authorities have made a statement of intent on being responsible global citizens," the daily concluded.
